Nine

“Y ou ready to lose?” Chris asked.

“The only one losing here is you, Your Highness.” There was no way she would let him have this one. He was going down.He dealt the cards and she got a measly pair of aces, but she drew three and ended up with a full house. He only drew one card, and she held her breath as he set his hand down. Two pair.

She punched her fist in the air. “Yes!”

“That was luck,” he said.

He dealt again, but this time he won. And looked quite pleased with himself, she couldn’t help but notice.

“This is it,” he said. He dealt the cards and when she picked hers up, her stomach plummeted. A pair of tens, which wasn’t much, or four to a queen-high straight. All she needed was a nine and there was no way she would lose. But if she kept the tens, she could possibly draw another ten and end up with three of a kind, or even a full house. Or she could end up with a measly pair.

What the heck, she’d never been one to play it safe. Besides, she had a good feeling about the hand.

She smiled smugly and said, “I’ll take one, please.”

He handed her one card and she discarded one of the tens. When she looked at the card, and saw that it was a nine, she had to bite her lip to keep from whooping out loud.

“Dealer takes two,” he said, meaning that at the most he had three of a kind, which wasn’t going to beat her straight. He took his cards, but his expression gave nothing away. “What have you got?”

She set her cards down on the duvet. “Queen-high straight. Read ’em and weep.”

He frowned and nodded. “That’s good,” he said, then a slow smile crept over his face. “But not good enough.”

He was just trying to psyche her out, there was no way—

He laid his cards down. “Full house, fours over deuces.”

Oh, damn. He won.

Chris grinned and gestured to her dress. “Hand it over, Your Highness.”

Melissa squared her shoulders, accepting her defeat with dignity, but, oh, how she hated losing. “Fine.”

She rose up on her knees, reached around and tugged at the zipper, but it got caught in the fabric on the way down. If she wasn’t careful, she might damage it.

“Problem?” he asked.

“It’s stuck.”

“Sure it is.”

“I’m serious. I can’t get it undone.”

He slid the cards out of the way and knee-walked across the mattress to her. “Turn around.”

She showed him her back and he tugged lightly on the zipper, the tips of his fingers brushing her skin. “It really is stuck.”

“I told you.”

“It’s caught in the fabric. Hold still.” He lifted her hair and draped it over one shoulder, then gently worked the zipper until it popped loose from the fabric. He tugged it slowly down and she felt a whoosh of cool air against her back. He leaned forward and she felt his warm breath against her neck.

“You smell so good,” he
